Works on the Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) from Ipoh to Padang Besar reached a milestone today when the engineering and construction team of MMC-Gamuda Joint Venture (MGJV) successfully punched through the final segment of the Larut tunnel, in Taiping, Perak.
The tunnel breakthrough signified MGJV’s successful tunnelling method of “drill and control blasting” which began in the middle of 2008.
Measuring 342 metres in length, the single Larut tunnel, has a “horse-shoe” diameter shape which is 13-metre in width and 10-metre in height.
During construction, a combined method of 24-hour drilling was made possible by a “drilling jumbo” or high speed drills (for drilling simultaneous holes at one time), and controlled blasting was required during specific day light and weather conditions.
Present at the site in Air Kuning, Taiping, to witness this significant milestone were YB Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, Minister of Transport, Dato’ Hj Zakaria Bin Hj Bahari, Chief Secretary of Ministry of Transport, En Abd Razak Abd Malek, Managing Director of KTMB, Dato’ Lin Yun Ling, Gamuda Group Managing Director, Dato’ Wira Syed Abdul Jaabar Bin Syed Hassan, Chairman of MMC Corporation Berhad, along with the Government’s project consultants, officials from the Ministry of Transport and KTMB, Board of Directors from MMC Corporation Berhad and Gamuda Berhad, local village heads, and other government officials.
